Lesson Plan

Stop, Think, Be Kind Lesson Plan

Students will recognize how words can hurt or help and practice sharing kindness by writing and collecting kind messages in a classroom Kindness Jar.

Making kindness tangible through a shared jar activity reinforces empathy, celebrates positive interactions, and builds a supportive classroom environment.

Slide Deck

Stop, Think, Be Kind

Welcome the class and introduce the lesson. Display the [Kind Words Poster](#kind-words-poster) where everyone can see it. Say: “Today we’re going to learn how to stop judgmental comments, think about how our words affect others, and choose kind words instead.”

Warm-Up Discussion

Gather students in a circle. Ask each volunteer: “What do judgmental comments feel like?” and “Can you share a time someone’s words hurt your feelings?” Encourage 3–4 students to share briefly.

Judgmental vs. Kind Words

Explain on the whiteboard: “Judgmental comments say something negative about someone. Kind words focus on positives or understanding.” Invite students to call out their own examples and write them next to yours.

Role-Play Practice

Divide students into groups of 2–3 and hand out the [Role-Play Scenario Cards](#role-play-scenario-cards). Set a 10-minute timer. Circulate, listening for both versions and gently guiding groups toward empathy.

Reflection and Sharing

Distribute the [Kindness Reflection Worksheet](#kindness-reflection-worksheet). Give students 5 minutes to write about a time they turned a negative comment into a kind one, then 5 minutes for volunteers to share with the class.

Closing & Daily Reminder

Re-display the [Kind Words Poster](#kind-words-poster). Reinforce: “Every day you have the power to choose kindness. Let’s practice stopping, thinking, and being kind!”
