Lesson Plan

Core Strength Focus Plan

Students will build core strength through guided bodyweight exercises and learn how protein supports muscle growth, enabling them to perform movements safely and make nutritious choices.

This Tier 2 small-group session provides extra support for students needing foundational fitness skills and nutrition knowledge, fostering confidence in exercise form and understanding of protein’s role in muscle repair.

Core Strength & Protein Power

Welcome everyone! Today we’re in our small-group session called “Strong Start.” We’ll focus on building core strength through bodyweight exercises and learn how protein helps our muscles grow and repair. Let’s get started with why a strong core matters.

Why Core Strength Matters

Explain that the core includes muscles in the abdominals, lower back, and hips. Point out how a strong core helps with balance, posture, and everyday movements—from carrying a backpack to playing sports.

Key Core Exercises

Demonstrate each exercise slowly, cueing form: keep hips level in plank, move limbs slowly in dead bug, and maintain a straight spine in bird dog. Invite students to try each move once before we do the circuit.

Protein 101: Muscle Repair

Introduce protein by comparing it to building blocks for muscles. Explain how exercise creates tiny muscle tears and protein helps repair and strengthen those fibers. Use everyday examples like repairing a scratch on a surface.

Top Protein Sources

Show real-life protein sources. Encourage students to think of snacks or meals they enjoy that include these foods. Emphasize balanced meals combining protein, carbs, and fats.

Fuel & Fitness Chat

Lead a brief discussion. Use guiding questions to connect the exercises with protein knowledge. Encourage each student to set one personal goal for movement or nutrition this week.
