Lesson Plan

Summer Coping Toolkit Lesson Plan

Equip 7th graders with four evidence-based coping strategies—physical activity, creative expression, social support, and mindfulness—and have them practice selecting and planning personalized skills through group scenarios and independent reflection.

Summer routines shift and stress can rise; teaching students to choose and apply healthy coping methods independently builds resilience and supports positive mental health beyond the classroom.

Summer Coping Toolkit

Welcome students and introduce yourself. Explain that today’s lesson will help them learn healthy coping skills to stay positive and resilient during summer break. Display the lesson objective: “Learn four evidence-based coping strategies and practice choosing the right one for summer stressors.”

Warm-Up & Breathing Exercise (3 min)

Transition: “Before we dive into our strategies, let’s calm our minds with a quick breathing exercise.” Lead students through box breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Repeat twice. Hand out the [Coping Skills Reference Sheet](#coping-reference-sheet).

Introduce Coping Strategies (4 min)

Review each strategy on the reference sheet. For each, provide a quick example or ask for a volunteer to share their own. Emphasize that all four can help manage stress and emotions.

Scenario Practice Activity (6 min)

Explain pairing up and drawing a scenario card. Circulate to listen and support groups. After 3 minutes, invite three pairs to share their scenario and selected coping strategy. Remind students to refer back to the reference sheet.

Cool-Down & Exit Ticket (2 min)

Distribute the [Exit Ticket Worksheet](#summer-coping-exit-ticket). Ask students to write: 1. One coping strategy they’ll use this summer. 2. One situation in which they’ll apply it. Collect tickets as students leave.

Have a Healthy, Resilient Summer!

Thank students for their participation. Encourage them to practice these skills whenever they feel stressed or overwhelmed. Wish them a fun and healthy summer.
