Taming Test Butterflies

Welcome students to the session. Introduce today’s theme: Taming Test Butterflies. Explain that “butterflies” means feeling nervous before a test and that we will learn tools to feel calm and confident.

Learning Goals

Read the learning goals aloud. Explain each one briefly. Point out that these goals will guide our practice today.

How Do You Feel Before a Test?

Warm-up conversation. Invite volunteers to fill in “I feel ____ when tests start.” Write responses on the board. Provide the sentence starter for students who need language support.

Deep Belly Breathing

Introduce Deep Belly Breathing. Model using the [Breathing Exercises Script](#breathing-exercises-script). Encourage students to place hands on their belly and follow your count.

5-4-3-2-1 Counting Breath

Teach the 5-4-3-2-1 Counting Breath using the same [Breathing Exercises Script](#breathing-exercises-script). Guide students slowly through each step.

Positive Self-Talk

Show the [Positive Self-Talk Cards](#positive-self-talk-cards). Model reading each affirmation in a calm voice. Explain how words can help us feel strong.

Test-Taking Strategies

Introduce strategies from the [Test-Taking Strategies Handout](#test-taking-strategies-handout). Show visuals or simple drawings for each strategy.

Hands-On Practice

Explain the hands-on activity. Distribute index cards and materials. Circulate to support pairs. Pair stronger readers with peers who need modeling.

My Test Plan

Distribute the [Test Reflection Worksheet](#test-reflection-worksheet). Offer a simplified version with a word bank for students who need extra support. Collect when done.

You’ve Got This!

Gather students in a circle. Ask volunteers to share one tool they’ll use next time. Encourage thumbs-up when they hear a strategy they like. Remind them they can practice anytime.
