Lesson Plan

Taming the Worry Beast Plan

Students will learn to identify their anxiety (“Worry Beast”) and practice two evidence-based coping strategies—deep breathing and thought-stopping—to build emotional regulation skills.

Helping students recognize and manage anxiety early promotes resilience, improves focus in and out of the classroom, and fosters peer support through shared experiences.

Slide Deck

Taming the Worry Beast

Welcome everyone! Introduce today’s goal: learn to recognize and manage worry using simple tools. Set a supportive tone and explain we’ll meet our “Worry Beast.”

Today's Agenda

Briefly run through each step of the session so students know what to expect.

Meet Your Worry Beast

Explain that giving worries a name helps make them less overwhelming. Encourage creativity.

Identifying Your Worry Beast

Distribute the worksheet. Guide students through listing worries and drawing their Beast. Invite volunteers to share and validate each one.

Deep Breathing Technique

Introduce deep breathing as a quick way to calm the body. Model the counts aloud.

Let's Breathe Together

Lead the group in three rounds. Count out loud or use a timer so everyone stays in sync. Pause between rounds to reset.

Thought-Stopping Strategy

Explain that stopping negative thoughts interrupts the worry cycle. Provide a quick example: “My Beast says I’ll fail, I say Stop!, then think ‘I’ve prepared well.’”

Pair Practice

Assign roles clearly. Circulate to listen in, model reframing when needed, and encourage supportive feedback.

Reflection & Next Steps

Facilitate a brief discussion. Highlight which technique felt most helpful and encourage application at home and school.

Thank You!

Thank students for their participation. Remind them they can revisit these tools anytime they feel overwhelmed and seek support.
