Lesson Plan

Taming the Worry Monster

Provide an eight‐session small‐group curriculum that helps 7th graders understand anxiety, identify triggers, practice coping strategies, and build support over 30-minute meetings.

Many middle‐schoolers experience rising worries but lack targeted support. This Tier 2 series builds emotional resilience, reduces barriers to learning, and fosters peer support.

Slide Deck

Session 1: What Is Anxiety?

Introduce the series. Explain that over eight sessions we'll learn what anxiety is and how to manage it. Use a friendly monster visual on the slide.

Symptoms of Anxiety

Guide students to brainstorm symptoms. Show an image of a racing heart or sweaty palms.

Stress Response Diagram

Prompt students to open the Stress Response Diagram Handout. Circulate and support completion. Remind them to label their stress “triggers” and “reactions.”

Session 2: Identifying Triggers

Welcome back. Use a mood meter visual. Ask students to place themselves on it.

Trigger Worksheet Activity

Have students work independently on the Anxiety Triggers Worksheet. Encourage them to think of recent moments of worry.

Session 3: How Our Brain Reacts

Use a simple brain diagram visual to introduce fight–flight–freeze. Explain each term briefly.

Role-Play Scenarios

Set up small groups. Provide role-play scenarios (e.g., pop quiz, argument with friend). Observe and offer feedback.

Session 4: Mindfulness Strategies

Display a calming nature image. Lead a 2-minute guided breathing exercise.

Practice & Reflection

Students practice each technique with eyes closed. Walk around quietly to check form.

Session 5: Problem-Solving Skills

Show the 4-step problem-solving chart. Explain each step with an everyday example.

Worksheet Activity

Hand out the worksheets. Students work in pairs to solve a sample scenario. Encourage creativity.

Session 6: Positive Self-Talk

Explain negative vs. positive self-talk. Display examples (“I can’t do this” → “I can try my best”).

Rewrite Activity

Give each student scripts. They rewrite a negative statement they’ve used into a positive one.

Session 7: Building a Support Network

Introduce support network concept. Show a simple map of family, friends, adults.

Map Activity

Students fill out the Support Network Map Template. Encourage them to think beyond family.

Session 8: Reflection & Action Plan

Show a collage of all strategies learned. Ask students to recall their favorites.

Draft Your Worry Plan

Guide students to draft a “Worry Plan” in their journals: trigger → strategy → support person.

Group Commitment

Close with a group commitment circle. Ask each student to share one thing they’ll use going forward.
