Terrific Twenty Lesson Plan

Students will explore and practice representing the number 20 through counting, writing, grouping, and a quick reflection exit ticket to build foundational number sense.

Adding an exit ticket provides formative assessment of each student’s understanding of 20 and encourages reflection, guiding future instruction.

Welcome students! Introduce our focus: the number 20. Ask: “What comes to mind when you hear ‘twenty’?”

Introduction to 20

Gather students near the poster. Lead them in counting aloud from 1 to 20. Prompt discussion: where do you see 20 in your life?

Counting with Cards and Counters

Distribute cards and counters. Circulate and prompt correct counting. Provide support as needed.

Practice Writing “20”

Model writing “20” on the board. Show correct formation. Then invite students to trace and write independently.

Grouping Game

Lay out the mat and scatter counters. Demonstrate grouping into rows of five, then introduce ten-frames.

Review & Closure

Bring everyone back. Reinforce learning by counting by fives and praising effort.
