Lesson Plan

Stress Survival Plan

Students will identify personal stressors, explore and practice multiple coping strategies, create a stress management toolkit, and share insights to build emotional resilience.

Adolescents experience mounting academic and social pressures. Equipping 8th graders with hands-on stress-management tools fosters real-time coping, reduces anxiety, and promotes long-term well-being.

Stress SOS: Your Stress Survival Kit

Welcome students to the Stress SOS workshop. Introduce yourself and explain that today they’ll build real tools to handle stress in fun, hands-on ways.

What Is Stress?

Define stress clearly. Use everyday examples (homework deadlines, friend drama) and invite quick student responses.

Common Adolescent Stressors

Ask volunteers to share which stressor resonates most with them and why. Emphasize that they’re not alone in feeling these pressures.

Why Coping Strategies Matter

Highlight how healthy coping turns stress into manageable challenges. Contrast quick fixes (avoidance) with lasting tools.

Session Overview

Walk through the session flow so students know what’s coming and feel prepared.

Strategy Brainstorm

Explain the three brainstorming categories. Encourage each group to think of one new idea per category.

DIY Stress Ball

Demonstrate how to fill the balloon, secure it, and decorate it. Remind them to write an affirmation on their stress ball.

Reflection Journal

Play soft background music. Circulate to prompt students who get stuck on their reflection prompts.

Coping Strategy Share

Model a brief share with a volunteer. Emphasize active listening and positive feedback.

Takeaways & Next Steps

Summarize today’s key takeaways and explain follow-up: maybe a check-in next week to see how they’re using their tools.
