Lesson Plan

Think Before AI Lesson Plan

By the end of this two-session lesson, students will identify appropriate AI uses, evaluate AI-generated content credibility, and apply ethical guidelines in their own writing and research.

This lesson equips High School English students with critical thinking and digital citizenship skills to navigate AI tools responsibly and ethically in academic and everyday contexts.

Think Before AI: Session 1 Overview

Welcome students and introduce today’s focus: understanding AI tools for writing and research. Mention that today’s session aligns with the lesson plan’s objective to identify appropriate AI uses and evaluate content credibility.

Warm-Up: Your AI Experiences

Prompt students to share real experiences. Record responses on the board. Aim to generate 5–7 examples.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Define AI in simple terms. Explain machine learning and natural language processing. Relate back to student examples from the warm-up.

AI in Writing & Research

Show real-world academic tools. Explain how each tool uses AI. Encourage students to note these examples in their guided notes.

Responsible vs. Irresponsible AI Use

Highlight the difference between using AI ethically (with attribution, as a helper) versus unethically (plagiarism, misinformation). Have students jot down one responsible and one irresponsible use.

Discussion Prompts

Read prompts aloud and allow pairs to discuss for about 2–3 minutes each. Circulate to support students using guided notes.

Exit Ticket

Explain the exit ticket and collect responses as students leave. Use these responses to gauge understanding and plan for Session 2.

Think Before AI: Session 2 Overview

Welcome back! Reconnect to our previous discussion on responsible AI use. Introduce today’s focus on AI ethics: bias, plagiarism, and fairness.

What Is AI Ethics?

Define ethics in the context of AI. Emphasize why transparency, accountability, and fairness matter when designing and using AI systems.

Bias in AI

Explain how biased data or algorithms can lead to unfair outcomes. Share real-world examples (e.g., hiring tools, facial recognition).

Plagiarism & Attribution

Discuss the risk of passing off AI-generated text as your own. Model how to attribute and revise AI content to maintain academic integrity.

Discussion Prompts

Use these prompts to guide the upcoming group discussion and debrief.
