Lesson Plan

Unmasking Yourself

Students will identify personal strengths, recognize and label emotions, and articulate an area for growth through guided reflection. They will complete a self-awareness worksheet and participate in paired sharing to foster self-awareness.

Developing self-awareness builds emotional intelligence and empathy, enabling students to understand themselves and others better. This foundation supports positive decision-making, interpersonal skills, and overall personal growth.

Slide Deck

Self-Awareness: Knowing You

Welcome students and introduce the session. Write “Self-Awareness: Knowing Your Strengths, Emotions & Growth Areas” on the board. Explain that by the end of class they will have identified personal strengths, emotions, and one area to grow. Ask students to think silently: “What makes you unique?”

My Strengths

Distribute the [Self-Awareness Worksheet](#worksheet-unmasking-self-awareness). Give students 5 minutes to list 3–5 qualities under “My Strengths.” Walk around to prompt ideas (creative, kind, curious, etc.). After 5 minutes, have students pair up to share one strength.

Identifying Emotions

Show a few sample cards from the [Emotion Card Set](#emotion-card-set-unmasking). Model drawing two cards and naming emotions. Give students 5 minutes to draw, then write their two chosen emotions under “My Emotions.” Invite 2–3 volunteers to share why they chose their cards.

Areas for Growth

Ask students to think about something they’d like to improve—academic, social, or emotional. Encourage them to be specific (e.g., listening more carefully, mastering multiplication facts). Give 5 minutes for writing.

Sharing & Reflection

Bring attention back to a volunteer pair. Have a few students share one strength, one emotion, and their growth area. Close by emphasizing that knowing ourselves helps us make better choices and understand others.
