Students will practice respect and empathy by role-playing peers’ viewpoints using scenario cards and completing reflections to articulate feelings and kind responses.

This lesson cultivates essential social-emotional skills by teaching students to appreciate others’ perspectives, foster kindness, and build a supportive classroom community.

Walking in Their Shoes

Welcome students and introduce today’s focus on empathy and respect. Explain that through interactive activities they will ‘walk in someone else’s shoes.’

Lesson Objectives

Read each objective aloud and ask students to think about why these skills matter in and out of the classroom.

Warm-Up: Defining Respect

Ask students to share examples and record answers on chart paper. Highlight how empathy connects to respect.

Perspective-Taking Activity

Divide students into groups of 3–4 and distribute the scenario cards. Circulate to support role-plays.

Sample Scenario

Model this sample scenario with a volunteer group before students begin their own role-plays.

Group Discussion

Facilitate whole-class sharing. Encourage students to connect empathy actions to real-life situations.

Reflection Cool-Down

Distribute the worksheet and give students time to write. Invite a few volunteers to share their reflections.
