What If We Decide? Exploring Ripple Effects

Welcome students and set the purpose: Today we’ll explore how our everyday choices create ripple effects in our lives and community. Introduce the slide deck and preview the agenda: definition, CASEL framework, scenarios, discussion, and reflection.

What Is a Ripple Effect?

Guide students through the ripple analogy: drop a pebble in water and watch circles expand. Relate to choices: each choice creates consequences that spread.

CASEL Responsible Decision-Making

Briefly explain CASEL’s Responsible Decision-Making standard and its key steps. Emphasize that thoughtful choices help us achieve positive outcomes.

Scenario Station 1

Station 1 scenario: Students read quietly, then discuss as a group. Encourage them to pinpoint the decision and list possible ripples.

Scenario Station 2

Station 2 scenario: Ask groups to discuss how sharing or not sharing affects friendships and reputation.

Scenario Station 3

Station 3 scenario: Prompt students to think about trust and consequences when cheating occurs.

Scenario Station 4

Station 4 scenario: Encourage them to consider emotional impact when spreading or stopping a rumor.

Consequence Chat Prompts

Introduce the whole-class chat. Display these prompts, pass out cards, and invite students to read and respond. Facilitate connections across scenarios.

Reflection & Exit Ticket

Explain the exit ticket process. Students will write one personal choice and its ripple effect. Collect these to assess understanding.
