Faces in Sync

Welcome students and introduce the lesson objectives. Explain that today we’ll read a fun poem about faces together and then draw our own faces using words from the poem.

Introduction & Activation

Gather students in a semicircle. Ask simple questions: “What makes you happy? What does a surprised face look like?” Show the poem sheet to pique interest.

Choral Reading the Poem

Model reading with expression and rhythm. Lead echo reading line by line. Repeat two more times, encouraging big voices and matching facial expressions.

Discuss Emotions & Vocabulary

Reread each stanza slowly. Pause to highlight key words (smile, frown, wide eyes, big grin). Invite students to show each face with their own expressions.

Create Your Self-Portrait

Distribute paper and crayons/markers. Instruct students to draw their own face, labeling eyes, nose, mouth, and choosing an expression word from the poem.

Share & Reflect

Invite each child to share their portrait, name the expression, and say one new word. Offer praise and reinforce vocabulary before closing.

Lesson Plan

Who Do You See?

Students will choral read a simple “All About Me” poem to build oral language and confidence, then draw and label their own self-portraits—naming facial features and choosing an emotion—to develop vocabulary, body awareness, and fine motor skills.

Integrating choral reading with art supports early literacy, self-expression, and fine motor development. This lesson helps Pre-K learners recognize and name body parts, practice new words together, and build confidence through sharing their own artwork.

Who Do You See?

Welcome students and introduce the lesson objectives. Explain that today we’ll read a fun “All About Me” poem together and then draw our own self-portraits using words from the poem to name body parts and feelings.

Introduction & Activation

Gather students in a semicircle. Ask, “Who do you see when you look in a mirror?” Invite a few responses to build excitement. Show the [All About Me Poem Sheet](#all-about-me-poem-sheet) and read the first line aloud with expression.

Choral Reading

Model fluent, expressive reading of the poem. Lead the class in echo reading: you say each line, students repeat. Repeat the entire poem two more times, encouraging clear voices and big facial expressions.

Discuss Body Parts & Vocabulary

Reread each line slowly. Pause to highlight and point to the words eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair. Ask students to point to each part on their own faces as you say it.

Create Your Self-Portrait

Distribute drawing paper and crayons/markers. Invite students to draw their own face, labeling eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair. Encourage them to choose one feeling word from the poem (happy, sad, surprised) and show it in their portrait.

Share & Reflect

Invite each student to display their portrait. Ask them to name one labeled body part and say the feeling word they chose. Celebrate each child’s work with applause and praise new vocabulary.
