Wonderful W Lesson Plan

Students will recognize uppercase and lowercase Letter W, produce its /w/ sound, and practice writing it through multisensory activities to build early literacy and fine motor skills.

Understanding letter–sound correspondence and forming letters correctly are foundational literacy skills. Engaging music, visuals, and hands-on playdough supports diverse learners and strengthens memory.

Wonderful W

Welcome students warmly. Introduce today’s focus: the letter W. Show uppercase “W” and lowercase “w” on the board. Briefly explain we’ll sing, hunt, trace, and mold Ws today.

Let’s Sing the W Song

Cue up and play the song from [Letter W Song Audio](#letter-w-song-audio). Model waving your arms in a W shape to the rhythm before inviting children to join.

Sound & Visual Hunt

Display flashcards one at a time from [Letter W Flashcards Set](#letter-w-flashcards-set). Emphasize the /w/ sound. When students hear or see a W word, prompt them to give a “W-wave.”

Tracing Practice

Hand out the [Letter W Tracing Worksheet](#letter-w-tracing-worksheet) and crayons or markers. Model tracing uppercase W first, then lowercase w. Circulate and offer one-on-one help.

Playdough Letter Shaping

Distribute playdough and W-shaped cookie cutters. Demonstrate pressing the cutter into dough then free-forming Ws. Encourage each child to say a W-word as they create.

Review & Celebrate

Gather students back on the rug. Ask volunteers to name W-words and show the letter W with their arms. Praise everyone’s effort and celebrate what they’ve learned.
