The Power of Words

Introduce the topic by highlighting that words have power. Emphasize that just as a superhero uses words to inspire, we all can choose words that uplift or hurt others. Get the student thinking about times when kind words made a difference.

Positive Impact

Discuss the positive effects of using kind words. Provide real-life examples that a fifth grader could understand, e.g., compliments from a friend. Ask the student to share a time when kind words made them feel good.

Negative Impact

Highlight the negative impact of hurtful words. Use scenarios or role-play examples to illustrate how negative language can hurt someone. Encourage discussion around why it's important to be mindful of what we say.

Your Words Matter!

Summarize the key takeaways. Introduce a quick role-play activity where the student practices switching a negative comment to a positive one. Remind them that their words have the power to change the world around them.

Understanding Personal Space

Introduce the topic of personal space by explaining that our bodies are our own and that it's important to ask for permission before touching someone else, just as we want others to ask for our permission.

What is Respectful Touch?

Discuss what respectful touch means. Give examples like a friendly high-five or a handshake, and contrast these with touches that might make someone uncomfortable without permission.

The Importance of Consent

Outline the idea of consent in simple terms. Use relatable language such as waiting for a clear yes before any touch. Highlight that if someone says 'no', it must be respected immediately.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Present a role-playing scenario to practice setting boundaries and asking for consent. Encourage the student to think of ways they might say 'no' or ask for permission.
