Session 1: Understanding Emotions

Welcome the student. Introduce yourself and explain that today’s session will focus on understanding and naming emotions as well as identifying personal triggers.

Learning Objectives

Read the learning objectives aloud. Emphasize how recognizing emotions will lay the groundwork for healthy coping skills.

What Are Emotions?

Ask: “What are some emotions you know?” List responses. Then define an emotion as a signal that tells us how we feel inside.

The Emotion Wheel

Explain that the Emotion Wheel shows many different feelings. Distribute the Emotion Wheel Worksheet now.

Activity: Color Your Emotion Wheel

Guide the student through coloring and labeling each segment. Ask for an example of a time they experienced each emotion.

Common Triggers

Explain what a trigger is and display examples. Encourage brainstorming.

Your Personal Triggers

Ask the student to write down two personal triggers on their worksheet. Discuss how being aware of these can help them prepare.

Game: Emotion Charades

Introduce the Emotion Charades Game. Model one round if time allows.

Reflection & Closing

Ask the student to share one new emotion they learned and one trigger they identified. Preview next session on coping strategies. Praise their participation.
