Welcome students to the Diet Detective challenge. Introduce yourself as their guide. Explain that in today’s lesson they will become “nutrition detectives” comparing dietary guidelines from around the world.

Global Dietary Guidelines Comparison Chart
Display the chart on the board or projector. Point out columns for each guideline and rows for food groups/components.
Introduce USDA MyPlate. Highlight the five food groups and portion visuals.
Harvard Healthy Eating Plate
Show the Harvard plate graphic and explain how it differs from USDA MyPlate.
Mediterranean Diet Overview
Discuss the Mediterranean Diet’s focus on olive oil, fish, and plant foods.
Other Cultural Dietary Guides
Briefly mention one or two other cultural guidelines (e.g., Japan, Latin America). Emphasize diversity.
Group Analysis Instructions
Explain how groups will use the Diet Detective Analysis Template to record observations.
Group Presentations & Chart Building
Guide students as they present. Fill in the comparison chart live.
Prompt students to reflect and complete their exit ticket. Collect templates and reflections.
