Mastering Middle School Calm
Welcome the student and introduce yourself. Explain that today’s session will help them learn tools to manage stress and feel more in control at school and home.
Review each objective briefly. Emphasize that by the end of the session they’ll have practiced all skills and created a plan to use them.
Ask: “What makes you feel stressed or overwhelmed at school or home?” Listen and validate their experiences. Define coping skills in their words.
Display the Deep Breathing Infographic and point to each step. Model the pattern with your hands on your belly: inhale–hold–exhale.
Guide the student through three rounds, counting out loud. After each round, ask how they feel and notice any changes.
Positive Self-Talk Strategy
Explain that the words we say to ourselves can change our mood. Show examples and encourage the student to practice saying them out loud.
Hand over the worksheet and support the student as they write. Encourage personal relevance, e.g. changing examples to match their challenges.
Introduce the idea of taking short, mindful breaks to reset. Show the chart and explain each example briefly.
Help the student choose their top three from the brain-stormed list. Ask them why each feels helpful and realistic.
Integrating Skills with Strategy Cards
Present a scenario such as test anxiety or a crowded hallway. Show how to pick strategy cards in order and walk through each coping step.
Distribute the reflection journal. Encourage honest answers and concrete plans for when and where they will practice each skill.
Congratulate the student on completing the session. Reinforce their ability to use the tools anytime they feel stressed.
