Our Class, Our Rules

Introduce the session. Emphasize our goal: co-creating classroom rules that everyone owns. Highlight the value of student voice and teamwork.

Warm-up & Introduction (5 min)

Prompt students to think of examples when rules made them feel safe or included. Set a 5-minute timer. Circulate to support think-pair discussions.

Brainstorming Rules (10 min)

Divide students into groups of 4–5. Remind them to use the template categories. Set a 10-minute timer and circulate to guide ideas.

Gallery Walk & Discussion (7 min)

Set a 7-minute timer. Encourage positive, constructive comments. After gallery walk, lead discussion to identify top themes.

Finalize & Display (5 min)

Guide students through consensus or quick vote on wording. Record each final rule clearly on the display chart. Keep this visible all year.

Reflection & Role Assignment (3 min)

Ask 1–2 students to share how collaborating felt. Explain each role’s purpose and select students for the first rotation.

Our Class, Our Rules

Welcome students and set a positive tone. Say: “Today, we’ll build our classroom rules together so everyone feels respected, responsible, and safe.” Point out the agenda and remind them their ideas matter.

Warm-up & Introduction (5 min)

Explain why rules matter. Prompt: “Think of a time rules helped you feel safe or included.” Set a 5-minute timer. Circulate during think-pair-share and invite 2–3 pairs to share.

Brainstorming Rules (10 min)

Divide into groups of 4–5. Show the [Collaborative Classroom Rules Template](#collaborative-classroom-rules-template). Set a 10-minute timer. Encourage clear handwriting and creative drawings to illustrate rules.

Gallery Walk & Discussion (7 min)

Launch a gallery walk: students quietly read each chart and add comments or suggestions with sticky notes. Set a 7-minute timer. After, lead discussion: “What themes do we notice?”

Finalize & Display (5 min)

Display the compiled list. Use a quick hand vote or consensus to finalize wording. Record each agreed rule on a large display chart. Take a photo to share.

Reflection & Role Assignment (3 min)

Ask 2–3 students to reflect on the collaboration process: “How did it feel? Why is it important?” Introduce roles: Rule Keeper, Time Monitor, Discussion Lead. Assign for the week and encourage pride.
