Words Matter: Building Bridges

Welcome students and introduce the session. Begin by explaining that our words can build bridges or create barriers. Emphasize that today we'll learn why it's important not to use harmful language like swearing and how we can repair relationships using respectful communication.

The Impact of Our Words

Start by discussing the impact of words. Ask students how they feel when they hear hurtful language and share examples of respectful language. Use this slide to frame the conversation about the emotional impact of swearing on peers and staff.

Introduce the first video. Explain that the video about empathy by Brené Brown will help us understand why it's important to see things from someone else's perspective before we speak.

Reflect on Empathy

After the empathy video, engage the students by asking them to reflect on how understanding others’ feelings might remind us to choose kinder words. Invite a few responses and connect their ideas to everyday interactions.

Introduce restorative strategies by showing the video on The Best Way to Apologize. Highlight that apologies are important in fixing hurt feelings and rebuilding trust when unkind words are used.

Role-Play Scenarios

Explain the role-play activity. Divide students into small groups and give each group a scenario where swearing creates hurt feelings. Ask them to come up with a restorative conversation using respectful language.

Reflect & Write

Transition into the worksheet activity. Emphasize that the worksheet will allow students to reflect on what they've learned about the impact of their words and how a thoughtful apology can repair relationships.

Cool-Down & Reflection

Wrap up the lesson by inviting a few students to share their personal commitments on using respectful language, focusing on actionable steps they will take in their everyday interactions.
